    Recipe: Simple Salmon Cure

The Covid-19 situation has removed the possibility for going out, which can make dinner a little less appealing as most of the time we cook simple meals for ourselves and not anything overtly fancy unless we have guests or its a special occasion. Making special meals, while maybe a bit more effort, at least makes me feel a little better throughout this time. They do say people are making more bread with all this time. I’m making cured salmon and trying restaurant recipes at home. So heres a recipe for a really simple cured salmon I think you might enjoy. It can be paired with any number of sides (the…

    From a Place of Love

I am not a doctor – any views expressed here I have researched to the best of my ability but may not reflect your doctors advice or be the right thing for you My story probably isn’t unfamiliar, I think a lot of people suffer from the idea that because they aren’t skinny they aren’t good enough, and these issues are insidious. A 2011 study said 40-60% of elementary school girls already had body image issues. My body image issues began when I hit puberty, my body changed and I was not happy with it. By the time I was in University, my quest for a “perfect” body had turned…

    Recipe: Poké Bowl

I hope you’re having a wonderful day and staying healthy! Today’s recipe is… kind of a recipe? More of a guideline really, I’ll give you some ingredients to include but I really encourage you to take advantage of your one grocery trip for the week to get the freshest ingredients possible. This recipe can be adapted to what’s in season very easily. I’ll give you the building blocks and you can add to it what you want. For example – my version contained starfruit which I don’t always get at the store, so explore what you like and play around – note because it’s a Poke Bowl you’ll want to…

    What’s in My Gym Bag

Ah the gym, while it was open it was a haven. While yes sometimes the stares of future gym goers during what was meant to be a private session was annoying and 30 minutes was never long enough for the length of my current training program, it was a place to go to unwind. The gym’s closure has made my gym bag kind of obsolete as I no longer set my stuff down when running but I thought I’d share the equipment that makes my training awesome anyways. I love my pants, love them – while I am happy to throw on a ratty t-shirt or an old racerback, I…

    Recipe: Morrocan Butternut Squash Soup

I’ve been in the mood for morrocan food. It’s the simplest explanation I have for making this recipe. This is low calorie and can be edited to be vegan or vegetarian if that’s what you need. It can also be served hot or cold (note the cold soup is thicker). So without further ado: the recipe. Moroccan Butternut Squash Soup 4 Cups Butternut Squash ((roughly 2 squash)) 1 Clove Garlic 1/2 Tsp Cumin 1 Knob Fresh Ginger 14 Ounces Coconut Milk 4 Cups Chicken or Vegetable Broth Salt & Pepper (to taste) 2 Ounces Crumbled Goat Cheese 1 Cup Pomegranate Arils Preheat the Oven to 425 degrees Peel then slice…

    Quarantine and Quiet

I hope you’re happy, safe and well right now. What’s going on is unprecedented and I hope that I can bring a bit of happiness to an otherwise uncertain time. While I’m not quarantining I am self-isolating as recommended by the Canadian Government after travel for a period of 14 days. This means reducing interactions with people outside my family. I’m in Montreal right now where things have slowly shut down, no more starbucks trips or restaurant reviews for now.  There are downsides to self-isolation, hello boredom and a desire to eat all the snacks in my kitchen, as well as an inability to follow my exercise regime because the…

    Recipe: Citrus-Miso Scallops

Our first recipe! Look I get it, you’re probably thinking “oh jeez not another rambling story about the inspiration behind this meal can we get to the recipe already?” I’ve been there. I’m sure a lot of people like reading them but it’s not for me. I promise that these inspiration bites are going to be short. I won’t go through the whole thought process and I’ll stick to the good stuff.  I get a lot of my inspiration from Pinterest searches on Food Photography. I try to find ones with a recipe attached and then wing it just a touch. Food should be about flavour and playfulness. I mean…

    The Art of Vacationing

Warm sand between your toes, diving into cool blue lagoons, cocktails on the beach, bright sunshine across your skin. These are, to me, the aspects of a perfect vacation, although I would be equally happy on a couch in the springtime or lying in dew-damp grass with chickens around me.  This time though I’m experiencing the former, and being ready for a perfect vacation means feeling and looking my best, starting with building a wardrobe. Pack for the vacation you’re going on – don’t pack summer dresses if you’re going skiing – in this case a tropical vacation needs lots of sun dresses, several bathing suits and short shorts I…

    Healthy Hydration

I am not a doctor – any views expressed here I have researched to the best of my ability but may not reflect your doctors advice or be the right thing for you  You’ve probably heard it before – you should be drinking more water. A widely touted figure is eight eight-ounce glasses a day though this isn’t quite right. Activity levels, other drinking habits (read tea and coffee), thirst level and heat can all play a role in how much you need to consume in a day.  Hydration affects a ton of different body systems too, from affecting your mood and giving you headaches if you haven’t properly hydrated…

    Restaurant Review: Cafe Aunja

Nestled in the lower levels of the strip along Sherbrooke between Cotes-des-Neiges and Rue de la Montagne, Café Aunja is warm and inviting from the moment you step into the space. Houseplants surround the almost dessert-like pale wood creating a secret oasis away from the hustle of the city.  Served in a hefty mason jar mug, the tea leaves are left loose to sink slowly as the tea steeps. A quick stir with a spoon and the picture perfect cup turns into kind of a mess, if you don’t like bits in your drinks you probably won’t like this, it requires either the consumption of the bits or the use…
